I could not have asked for a better group of people to work with than those at Heitman Architects and Trendway. They gave me the creative freedom to take on a large portion of the project, and as a student that was a very satisfying feeling.”

Beyond Shades 2The second position is for someone who wants to learn about window treatments by working with designers. This has the potential to grow in to a lucrative position.

THE POSITION: Design Assistant  (hourly paid)
Schedule: Work hours will vary 20-30 hours per week and will be comprised of 4-5 hour shifts between the hours of 8am to 6pm; Monday-Saturday.

Tasks and day-to-day responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Accompany Designers to all appointments and be responsible for carrying all samples into the client (must be able to lift and carry 25lbs-40lbs on a regular basis).
  • Design Assistant will be the primary driver to all appointments, driving everywhere in the Chicagoland area. Must be comfortable driving in Chicago traffic and have a strong sense of direction.
  • Design Assistant is responsible for making sure all samples and customer materials are fully stocked in the work vans.
  • Design Assistant is responsible for working with designers, pulling fabric, maintaining discontinued samples, and managing the “back room” of the business.
  • Design assistant will complete company training program on hard window treatments.
  • Assistant Designer will also execute administrative functions as required.

Must have strong organizational qualities, work well independently, and be a self-starter. Will be responsible for running errands using company vehicle and a valid driver’s license is mandatory. Note, this is an extremely fast paced and busy company, must have a high level of sustainable energy to succeed in this position.

This much deserved honor was awarded on Wednesday evening, August 16th, during the fall semester kick-off events. Seeing her on stage with COD President Ann Rondeau and Vice President of Academic Affairs Donna Stewart was a moment to remember.

Shelly teaches the Residential, Contract, and Office Studios, as well as the Interior Systems and Details course. Students who have developed their design talents under her guidance are constantly singing her praises. Our entire faculty team is extremely proud of her.

Kitchen designers are responsible for creating and renovating kitchens to ensure that the design meets the requirements of their clients. The designs must be convenient and comfortable for the people who will use and live in them. They can design kitchens for homes and commercial establishments such as restaurants, hospitals, hotels and cafeterias.


  • Plan the functional aspects and the visual look of the kitchen spaces for their clients.

  • Deal with clients first: discuss the details of the project, draw the plan according to the client’s needs, prepare an estimated cost for the project, talk with architects, work with subcontractors, order the appliances and materials to be used and spearheaded the overall kitchen installation.

  • Plan for the whole aspect of the kitchen including layout, color, lighting, cabinets, floor coverings, appliances, work spaces.

  • Illustrate detailed plans either through hand drawings or computer software.

  • Understand how to read blueprints, building and fire codes, and stay current on the latest design trends.

  • Be able to do both bathroom and kitchen designs in residential and commercial areas.

Congratulations to COD Interior Design student extraordinaire Allison Schutz for taking home the top student award – and $2000 honorarium – at the 5th Annual IIDA Illinois Chapter RED Awards. There are numerous categories for professionals, but only one student award.

The competition is open to all Illinois Architecture and Interior Design firms and any student from an interior design program in the state of Illinois.

Allison’s project was a restaurant, Ganache, and was completed for the Contract Design Studio last spring. Be sure to check out her submission which has been posted in the main 3rd floor lobby.

Three other COD students also submitted fine projects in the competition. We hope to get them printed and posted in the Interior Design hallway so everyone can see the excellent work done by our students.
